Basically, some students remember materials they have seen, some remember materials they have heard and some remember things they have experienced. Knowing the difference in how students learn is important because when students study in a way that supports their type of learning style they can perform better on tests as well as improve their grades. Visual learners rely on seeing the material to help them remember the material being covered. Visual learning students may struggle during exams, because they cannot recall test material that they “heard” though lecture. Good study habits begin with finding a way to incorporate visual learning into their classwork and homework. The following study strategies for visual learners will help students make the most of their time spent on schoolwork and may increase their chances of academic success.

Visualizing Words

An excellent strategy for visual learners is to develop and use tools like diagrams, graphs and color coded systems. For example, by adding short paragraphs, words and/or pictures to pieces of paper, the student will be able to place these papers in the correct order, which creates a visual trail that will help to retain the information. Using flip cards is also an excellent way to visualize words. Writing the words on the flip cards and using different colors for different categories of information will be helpful in their visual stimulation.

Best Way to Present Information

Visual learners study and learn best when the information is presented in a visual format, such as diagrams or pictures. Some of the best ways to present information for visual learners to study may include:

• • When trying to remember information, closing the eyes and visualizing information
  • Including illustrations while taking notes in class
  • Use highlighter pens in contrasting colors to color-code various aspects of the information in textbooks
  • Create graphic organizers, such as concept maps and diagrams that use visual symbols to represent the information
  • While in class, sitting in the front of the class so they can clearly see the teacher will allow the student to pick up on facial expressions and body language that provides cues on what is being said and writing this information in their notes.
  • When using flip cards, limit the amount of information on the cards so that it will be easier to form a mental picture of the information

When visual learners are studying, it is essential that they study in a place that is free from visual distractions. Watching videos about the topics being studied will help with retaining information and when studying at home or school replaces words in notes with symbols whenever possible. Another great study strategy is to typewritten notes from the class using bold print, different fonts and underlining’s to help enforce a visual effect. Keep in mind that for visual learners, visual tools like flip cards and visual study guides can significantly improve their ability to retain and recall the information learned.
