There are several ways learning at home can be incorporated into everyday tasks. For example, you can show your child how science and math are part of everyday life when you grocery shop they can learn prices and comparison shopping, preparing meals is a great way to learn measurements as well as a little science or chemistry, and take the opportunity when fixing things around your house to teach measurements and use tools to teach the metric system.
Take Advantage of Online Resources
A lot of teachers use them at school so there is no reason why they can’t be used for learning at home as well. There is a vast array of websites that offer fun quizzes, coloring pages, videos and worksheets that will help to keep your child engaged in what they are learning. Online flip cards and online study guides are excellent resources for helping to build on skills children are currently learning in class as well as provide additional help for subjects they are struggling with.
Encourage Reading
Set aside an hour each day to read with or to your child. If your child has learned how to read, choose one day of the week for the two of you to go to the library and pick out a new book together and then go to the park or a coffee shop to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate together while reading the books you just picked up at the library. If your child doesn’t know how to read yet, make it a point to read to them every day. Remember to keep each other updated on what you like about the story you are reading and what you would both like to read next.
It is important that you look at your child’s homework every day. Monitoring their homework will help you to know where they are in their school studies and give you an idea of what you need to expand on with their at-home learning.
