December 11, 2019

English language learners (ELL) or English as a Second language or ESL students have steadily increased in our classrooms in every state with each passing year and will continue to do so. Visual learning helps ESL students greatly and is one of the best tools for bridging the language gap.
There are countless ways to incorporate visual learning into classrooms and we have been utilizing many of these ways for a long time for all students. Visual learners come in various shapes and sizes, every learner is unique. The chalk board or white board, for example, allows teachers to visually connect with the entire class. Using different colored markers for various parts of speech while learning English is a very effective way for ELL students to better grasp the language.Visual learners need to see new information in order to process and learn it; they need to see material in front of them, either drawn or written, in order to understand it well. Another great tool is the periodic table. It helps students to distinguish between solids, liquids, and gases by breaking the elements down by colors. The human brain does really well with remembering color, so use this to their advantage.Teaching with visual materials is the one of the easiest, most effective ways for visual learners to process information.
These are just a few examples, but visual learning can be incorporated in such a variety of ways to the classroom and is one of the best ways for ELL students to grasp the content material and focus on learning rather than the language gap.
