Dyslexia the most common learning disability

 What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a learning disability in which people have difficulties with language skills, especially reading, spelling, and writing. The causes are not clearly known. Dyslexia is classified as a learning disability primarily because it can prevent students from attaining academic success with typical classroom instruction.

It is important to note that dyslexia is unrelated to intelligence and motivation to learn. An estimated 15 to 20 percent of the U.S. population has dyslexia. It is the most common learning disability and the least understood.

Dyslexia often has negative impacts on students’ self-image. Some students are mistreated by their schoolmates because they have been labeled as “different”. Many also think that they are less intelligent or capable than they actually are. This can cause students to suffer tremendous stress and anguish and can lead to difficulty for students in schoolwork.

Dyslexia Students are Visual Learners.

Most students who have dyslexia are visual learners. They can learn quickly and much more easily when they are provided with visual images that reinforce language-based materials used in classrooms.

Many parents of these students face a wall of frustration and helplessness when trying to get any kind of help for their children from school systems. Unfortunately, most U.S. schools do not have the resources, time, or personnel to identify or provide intervention services for these students who have learning challenges. Very few teachers are trained to work with these students.

Concerned parents depend on teachers not only to assess and evaluate their children’s academic progress but also to help identify learning and social difficulties that their children might be experiencing. Dedicated teachers notice when students are struggling.

Parents and teachers are looking for materials to help these students succeed in school.
